15 Creative Ways to Repurpose Used IBC Totes Beyond Liquid Storage

From outdoor showers to chicken coops, fire pits to biogas digesters — discover 15 inventive second-life applications for used IBC totes that keep containers out of landfills.

Let's Talk IBCs

Beyond the Obvious

Most people know that used IBC totes make great rain barrels and garden planters. But the combination of a large HDPE container and a sturdy steel cage opens up dozens of creative repurposing possibilities. Here are 15 of our favorites — from practical to unexpected.

1. Outdoor Shower Station

Cut the top off an IBC, paint it black, and mount it on a raised platform. The sun heats the water naturally, and the existing discharge valve becomes your shower control. Add a simple showerhead connected to the valve via garden hose fittings. Perfect for pool areas, campsites, and outdoor work sites.

2. Composting System

A full-height IBC with ventilation holes drilled in the sides creates a high-volume hot composting bin. The enclosed design retains heat and moisture while the cage provides structure. Add a tap at the bottom valve for compost tea extraction.

3. Livestock Water Trough

The HDPE bottle, removed from its cage, makes an ideal livestock water trough. Cut to the desired height (12-18" works for most livestock) and place on a level surface. The food-grade plastic is safe for all animals and far more durable than galvanized metal troughs.

4. Emergency Water Storage

Every household should have emergency water storage. A clean, food-grade IBC tote holds 275 gallons — enough drinking water for a family of four for over 30 days. Add water treatment (8 drops of unscented bleach per gallon) and rotate annually.

5. Fish Pond / Koi Tank

The IBC cage makes a ready-made pond frame. Remove the top of the bottle, add a pond liner if desired, and install a small recirculating pump and filter. The 275-gallon capacity supports 10-15 koi or goldfish comfortably.

6. Tool and Equipment Wash Station

Mount an IBC on a platform with a built-in drain pan below. Connect a pump and spray wand for cleaning tools, equipment, or vehicle parts. The contained system prevents wash water from entering storm drains.

7. Biogas Digester

Small-scale biogas production is possible with two IBC totes: one as the digester vessel (sealed, with a gas outlet at the top) and one as the gas collector (inverted, floating in water). Feed the digester with food waste and manure; collect methane for cooking or heating.

8. Ice Bath / Cold Plunge

The wellness trend of cold plunging has created huge demand for affordable cold plunge setups. A clean IBC with the top cut off, filled with water and ice, provides a full-body cold plunge at a fraction of the cost of commercial units. The cage prevents the bottle from deforming under water pressure.

9. Mobile Fuel Storage

For farms, construction sites, and remote locations, IBCs can store diesel fuel, heating oil, or other non-flammable fuels. Note: Always verify the IBC's compatibility with your specific fuel and comply with local fire codes and EPA requirements for fuel storage.

10. Worm Farm

A half-cut IBC makes an industrial-scale worm farm capable of processing 20-30 pounds of organic waste per week. The bottom valve provides drainage for worm tea. Stack multiple half-IBCs vertically for a tiered system.

11. Dog Washing Station

Build a raised platform, place a half-cut IBC on top, add a ramp for the dog, and connect a warm water supply. The high walls contain splash, and the bottom drain makes cleanup effortless.

12. Firewood Storage

The steel cage — without the plastic bottle — makes an excellent firewood storage rack. The cage keeps wood organized, off the ground, and allows air circulation for seasoning. One cage holds approximately one face cord of firewood.

13. Chicken Coop Frame

Two IBC cages bolted together create the frame for a substantial chicken coop. Cover with hardware cloth, add a roof, and install nesting boxes. The modular cage structure makes it easy to customize the layout and expand later.

14. Outdoor Furniture Frame

IBC cage sections have been used to create industrial-style outdoor tables, benches, shelving units, and plant stands. Cut, weld, and paint the cage tubes to create custom furniture with a distinctive industrial aesthetic.

15. Hydroponic Growing System

Beyond aquaponics, IBC totes work as standalone deep water culture (DWC) hydroponic systems. Fill with nutrient solution, add an air pump for oxygenation, and float net pots with plants on the surface. A single IBC can support 20-30 lettuce heads or herb plants.

Getting Started

All of these projects start with a used IBC tote. We sell both food-grade and industrial-grade used IBCs suitable for repurposing, and our custom solutions team can pre-modify containers for specific projects.

The best part? Every IBC repurposed for a second life is one less container in a landfill. That's sustainability in action.
