Our Grading System
We use a transparent three-tier grading system so you can choose the condition that fits your needs and budget. Every tote is graded by our trained inspection team.
Grade A
Premium ConditionGrade A totes are our best-quality used containers. These have been used only once or twice, typically for clean, non-staining liquids like water, glycerin, or food-grade oils. The HDPE bottle is clear or only slightly cloudy, with no yellowing, staining, or odor.
What to Expect
- Bottle is clear to slightly hazy with minimal discoloration
- Steel cage is straight, rust-free, and structurally sound
- Original valve operates smoothly without leaking
- Fill cap and gasket are intact and functional
- Labels may be present from previous use
- Pallet base is in excellent condition with no broken boards
Grade B
Standard ConditionGrade B totes have been used multiple times and show moderate cosmetic wear. The bottle may have some discoloration, staining, or haziness from prior contents. These are the most popular grade for non-food industrial applications where appearance is less important than function.
What to Expect
- Bottle shows moderate discoloration, staining, or haziness
- Steel cage may have minor surface rust or dents (no structural issues)
- Valve is functional; may show wear but does not leak
- Fill cap gasket may need replacement for airtight seal
- Previous product labels and markings visible
- Pallet is functional; may have cosmetic wear or minor repairs
Grade C
Economy ConditionGrade C totes are the most affordable option. They show heavy cosmetic wear including significant staining, discoloration, and surface scuffing. The bottle is structurally intact and does not leak, but the appearance reflects extensive prior use. Ideal for non-critical applications like rainwater collection, irrigation, or waste storage.
What to Expect
- Heavy discoloration and staining; bottle is opaque or deeply colored
- Steel cage has visible surface rust and possible minor bends
- Valve may be stiff but functional; replacement recommended
- Fill cap present but gasket likely needs replacement
- Residual odor from prior contents may be present
- Pallet functional but may show damage or repairs
Food-Grade vs. Non-Food-Grade IBC Totes
Understanding the difference is critical for safety and compliance. Here is what separates these two categories.
Food-Grade IBC Totes
Food-grade IBC totes are manufactured from FDA-compliant HDPE resin and have only ever stored food-safe products. The bottle material meets 21 CFR 177.1520 requirements for contact with food substances. These totes are essential for storing drinking water, food-grade oils, syrups, flavorings, and any liquid that will be used in food production.
Key Characteristics
- FDA-compliant virgin HDPE material
- Documented chain of custody for prior contents
- No chemical cross-contamination risk
- Typically available in Grade A condition only
- Premium pricing due to limited supply and strict sourcing
Common prior contents: Vegetable oil, corn syrup, glycerin, fruit juice concentrate, food-grade alcohol, distilled water.
Non-Food-Grade IBC Totes
Non-food-grade IBC totes have previously held industrial chemicals, cleaning products, soaps, detergents, adhesives, or other non-food substances. While the HDPE material itself may be identical, these containers cannot be certified food-safe because of their prior contents. They are perfectly suited for industrial applications, water storage (non-potable), agricultural use, and waste collection.
Key Characteristics
- Previously held non-food chemicals or industrial liquids
- Available in all grades (A, B, and C)
- More affordable due to wider availability
- May have residual odor or slight staining from prior contents
- Ideal for industrial, agricultural, and non-consumable applications
Common prior contents: Soaps, detergents, cleaning chemicals, adhesives, de-icers, windshield washer fluid, industrial lubricants.
What's Included With Every Used IBC

Visual Inspection Report
Every tote receives a multi-point visual inspection covering bottle integrity, cage condition, valve function, pallet stability, and overall cleanliness.
Grade Label
Clear grade marking (A, B, or C) applied to the tote so you know exactly what condition category each unit falls into. No guesswork.
Rinsed Interior
All totes are triple-rinsed to remove residual product from prior use. Grade A food-grade totes receive additional sanitizing treatment as needed.
What Affects Used IBC Pricing?
Used IBC prices depend on several factors. Understanding them helps you get the best value for your specific application.
Condition Grade
Grade A commands the highest price; Grade C is the most affordable. The grading reflects cosmetic appearance, not structural integrity — all grades hold liquid safely.
Tote Size
275-gallon totes are the most common and generally the least expensive. 330-gallon and 550-gallon models cost more due to lower availability and higher material content.
Prior Contents
Food-grade totes (previously held food-safe products) are priced higher than non-food-grade due to limited supply and the chain-of-custody documentation required.
Order Quantity
Bulk orders of 50 or more units receive significant volume discounts. Full truckloads (56-60 units for 275-gal) offer the best per-unit pricing.
Valve Type
Totes with standard 2-inch butterfly valves are priced lowest. Units with camlock, ball valve, or specialty fittings may carry a small premium.
Market Supply
IBC availability fluctuates seasonally. Spring and summer typically see higher demand. Ordering during off-peak months can yield better pricing.

Industry Application Guide for Used IBCs
Different industries have different requirements for IBC condition, grade, and prior contents. Use this guide to identify the right grade for your specific application.
Agriculture & Farming
Recommended: Grade B or CCommon Uses
Irrigation water storage, fertilizer mixing, herbicide and pesticide dilution, livestock watering, hydroponic nutrient solutions, wash-down water supply for barns and equipment.
Requirements
Food-grade not required for most agricultural uses. Grade C totes are ideal for irrigation and livestock water. Grade B is suitable for chemical mixing. Avoid using totes previously containing toxic chemicals near food crops.
Pro Tip
For outdoor use, Grade C totes offer the best value since UV exposure will age the bottle regardless of starting condition. Consider adding a UV cover or insulation jacket to extend lifespan.
Food & Beverage Processing
Recommended: Grade A (Food-Grade Only)Common Uses
Ingredient storage (oils, syrups, flavorings), water for food production, juice concentrate handling, food-grade alcohol transport, wash-down water in food processing facilities.
Requirements
Must use food-grade totes with documented chain of custody. FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 compliant HDPE. Only Grade A condition accepted for food contact. Prior contents must have been food-safe substances.
Pro Tip
We recommend adding a single-use food-grade IBC liner for additional contamination protection, especially when switching between different food products.
Chemical Manufacturing
Recommended: Grade A or BCommon Uses
Bulk chemical storage, blending and mixing operations, chemical transport within facilities, raw material receiving, waste chemical collection, solvent storage (verify HDPE compatibility).
Requirements
Verify HDPE compatibility with your specific chemicals. For regulated materials, the original UN certification must be valid or the tote must be reconditioned with new certification. Spill containment pallets required in most jurisdictions.
Pro Tip
If your chemicals require UN/DOT certification for transport, consider our reconditioned IBCs instead. Used totes retain their original UN rating but cannot be re-certified without reconditioning.
Cleaning Products & Soaps
Recommended: Grade B or CCommon Uses
Bulk soap storage, detergent blending, cleaning concentrate distribution, floor cleaner dispensing, laundry chemical storage, car wash chemical supply.
Requirements
No special certifications needed for most cleaning products. Grade B totes offer a good balance of condition and cost. Prior contents of soaps and detergents are actually beneficial since the tote is already clean.
Pro Tip
Many of our used totes previously held cleaning products, so availability is excellent. These totes often have the cleanest interiors of any non-food-grade category.
Pharmaceutical & Cosmetics
Recommended: Grade A or ReconditionedCommon Uses
Bulk pharmaceutical ingredient storage, cosmetic raw materials (oils, fragrances, emollients), purified water storage, formulation mixing, intermediates holding.
Requirements
FDA-compliant containers required. Food-grade Grade A or reconditioned totes recommended. Stainless steel IBCs preferred for high-purity applications. IBC liners recommended for cross-contamination prevention.
Pro Tip
For pharmaceutical use, we strongly recommend our reconditioned IBCs with new UN certification and documented cleaning protocols. Used totes may not meet cGMP traceability requirements.
Construction & Concrete
Recommended: Grade CCommon Uses
Job-site water supply, concrete admixture storage, dust suppression water, equipment wash-down, form release agent storage, concrete curing compound.
Requirements
No special grade or certification needed. Grade C totes offer the best value for construction applications where containers are exposed to rough handling, outdoor conditions, and potential damage.
Pro Tip
Grade C totes at $40-$80 each are often cheaper than buying water delivery on construction sites. One 275-gallon tote replaces 35 five-gallon buckets of water.
How to Maintain Your Used IBC Totes
Proper maintenance extends the service life of your used IBC totes and ensures they continue to perform safely. Follow these expert guidelines to get the most out of every container.
Cleaning Between Uses
Always rinse your IBC thoroughly between product changes. For water and low-viscosity liquids, a triple rinse with clean water is sufficient. For oils, syrups, or sticky substances, use hot water (140-180F) with a mild alkaline detergent, followed by two clean water rinses. Never use abrasive tools or high-pressure washers directly on the HDPE bottle interior, as this can create micro-scratches that harbor bacteria and make future cleaning more difficult.
Important: For food-grade applications, sanitize after cleaning using a 200 PPM chlorine solution or food-safe quaternary ammonium sanitizer. Allow to air dry completely before refilling.
Valve Maintenance
Inspect the discharge valve every 3-6 months for smooth operation and leak-free closure. Lubricate the butterfly disc or ball mechanism with food-grade silicone lubricant if it becomes stiff. Replace the valve gasket annually or whenever you notice any seepage. A worn valve gasket is the most common cause of IBC leaks and costs only $3-$8 to replace. Always keep a dust cap on the valve outlet when not connected to a hose or fitting.
Important: If a valve begins dripping even after gasket replacement, replace the entire valve assembly. Replacement butterfly valves cost $15-$30 and take about 5 minutes to install.
UV Protection and Outdoor Storage
HDPE degrades when exposed to ultraviolet light over extended periods. If your IBCs are stored outdoors, use UV-protective covers or insulation jackets to shield the bottle from direct sunlight. Position totes so the discharge valve faces north to minimize sun exposure on the valve gasket. Rotate stock so that no single tote spends more than 12-18 months in direct outdoor exposure without protection.
Important: Signs of UV damage include yellowing, surface chalking, and increased brittleness of the HDPE. If you can flex the bottle wall and it cracks instead of bending, the bottle has exceeded its useful life and should be replaced.
Winter Freeze Protection
Water and water-based liquids expand approximately 9% when they freeze, which can crack the HDPE bottle. If freezing is possible, either drain the tote to below 90% capacity to allow expansion room, use an IBC heating blanket to maintain above-freezing temperature, or insulate with an IBC jacket. Never fill a tote above 95% capacity if there is any risk of freezing. The valve and fill cap area are most vulnerable to freeze damage.
Important: If a tote has frozen and thawed, inspect it carefully before reuse. Look for hairline cracks at stress points, particularly the bottom corners and around the valve outlet. A crack that is invisible when empty may leak under the hydraulic pressure of a full load.
Periodic Inspection Schedule
Inspect every IBC tote in your inventory at least every 6 months, or before each refill if used intermittently. Check the bottle for cracks, the cage for rust and structural damage, the valve for leaks, the cap gasket for seal integrity, and the pallet for stability. Document inspections for compliance records. For UN-rated containers used for regulated materials, inspection is required before each filling per 49 CFR 173.35.
Important: Keep a written or digital log of IBC inspections including date, inspector initials, and pass/fail status. This documentation is essential for OSHA compliance and liability protection.

The Environmental Case for Used IBC Totes
Buying used is the most environmentally responsible way to source IBC containers. Each reused tote directly prevents waste and conserves the energy and materials needed for new production.
New HDPE bottle production releases approximately 23 lbs of carbon dioxide. Reusing eliminates 100% of this manufacturing emission.
HDPE is derived from petroleum. Each IBC bottle contains roughly 15 lbs of polyethylene, requiring approximately 6 gallons of crude oil equivalent.
HDPE plastic takes over 500 years to decompose in landfills. Every reused IBC is one less container occupying landfill space for centuries.
When an IBC finally reaches end of life, we recycle 95% of the materials: HDPE is granulated, steel is smelted, and wood is chipped.
Sustainability Comparison: Used IBC vs. New IBC vs. 55-Gallon Drums
| Environmental Metric | Used IBC (275 gal) | New IBC (275 gal) | 5x New 55-gal Drums |
|---|---|---|---|
